Junior Savers

piggy bankCNEDCU currently have a growing number of junior members, (called junior savers - no membership fee is required). Junior savers can be any age from birth to 16 years. CNEDCU currently run schemes in 19 local schools where our volunteers visit weekly/fortnightly to collect savings from the children.

The focus of the credit union's training of school staff and children has been on the educational value of the junior savers scheme. Children have been led in discussions around banks and savings and asked to suggest ways to ensure that they are able to afford the things that are important to them now or that will be in the future.

Why not help us by letting your childs school know about the Junior Savers scheme?

Junior Savers Scheme in Schools

The Chesterfield and North East Derbyshire Credit Union runs savings schemes for children and young people in schools across the area. Children get their own passbook and can save regularly in a more convenient and familiar setting.

This is a great opportunity for schools to have a positive impact, not only on creating a good financial ethos for future generations of the community, but the scheme can also be used to aid the teaching of financial capability to students. It is also viewed well by Ofsted inspectors.

We are already up and running in more than a dozen schools and we cover all types of school, infant, junior, primary and secondary. Don’t be misled by the name ‘Junior Savers’ that simply implies up to age 16.

A savings scheme in your school is a simple thing to run. In brief:

  • A dedicated co-ordinator from the Credit Union will do all the initial setting up for the school.
  • The first few collections can be staffed by us. After that, either school staff, a governor, parent or helper can take on this role. We can also help with volunteers who can do this if you can’t.
  • A typical collection lasts around 20 minutes to half an hour.
  • Older children can even staff the collection point, aiding the teaching of financial capability.
  • All money collected at the school will be picked up by the Credit Union staff, so no extra work for your staff.
  • Children who join the scheme will get a Starters Pack containing goodies!
  • Fantastic way to encourage young children to get into the savings habit at an early age
  • Save as little as you want - just a few pence a week is fine
  • Money is easy to access - with no penalties for withdrawals
  • Participating local schools operate in - school savings collection points
